The Kogi State Government has ordered the temporary closure of selected markets and motor parks across parts of Kogi West Senatorial District as security agencies intensify coordinated operations to flush out terrorists, bandits and other criminal elements.

The government said the decision followed consultations with security agencies and relevant local authorities, explaining that the measure is aimed at cutting off logistics, restricting movement of consumables and denying criminal networks access to food supplies and support systems during the ongoing operations.

According to the state, the operations are being carried out “in collaboration with the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) and heads of security agencies in the state,” with closures taking immediate effect in affected communities.

In Lokoja Local Government Area, markets and motor parks in Oshokoshoko, Jakura, Ogbagbon, Agbaja, Atsawa, Obajana, Apata, Abugi, Amomi, Ebee and Budon have been shut. Similar closures apply in Kabba-Bunu, Yagba West, Yagba East, Kogi and Mopamuro local government areas, covering dozens of communities listed by the government.

The state government described the closures as temporary, noting that they “will be lifted immediately after the successful conclusion of the ongoing security operations.”

Authorities said the operations are already yielding results. The government disclosed that “sixteen (16) kidnapped victims have been successfully rescued from the camp of the notorious bandit leader, Kachalla Battijo, located within the Tunga Forest,” adding that the camp “has been overrun and taken over by security forces.”

Reaffirming its stance, the government said it remains “firmly resolved not to negotiate with bandits or pay ransom under any circumstance.”

Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, and heads of security agencies for their support and “the successes recorded so far.”

While acknowledging the hardship the closures may cause, the government said the sacrifice is necessary “to restore peace and security across the state,” stressing that movements within affected areas will be closely monitored.

The state security adviser has been directed to ensure strict compliance, while local government chairmen are to monitor implementation and submit regular situation reports as the Ministry of Information intensifies grassroots sensitisation.
