It is agreed across different divides that one of the major drivers of Nigeria’s economy is Abdul Samad Rabiu, the founder – and Chairman – of the frontline conglomerate, BUA Group.

Rabiu’s immense contributions to revamping the fortunes of Nigeria cut across different sectors – including philanthropy.

Sola Onamodu touches on some of the huge value-addings of the founder of the largest charity giving by a private individual in this part of the world, the Abdul Samad Rabiu (ASR) Africa Initiative.

The initiative founded in March 2021 with a yearly set aside of $100m for delivering sustainable development in Health, Education, and Social development in Africa – has been spurring high impact change, particularly in Nigeria through unceasing donations and community projects that speak to telling social issues and human capital development.

ASR Africa has exceptionally been boosting education across higher institutions of learning with provisions of grants to institutions – for turnaround projects and initiatives- across different regions.

Some of the litany of high-value donations of ASR Africa Initiative to higher institutions of learnings in Nigeria include, grant for the N250million ultra-modern sports complex to the University of Jos, the N250million worth of ultra-modern lecture theatre and other facilities to Adamawa state university formerly occupied by insurgents, construction of a 3000 seater amphitheater valued at N1billon in the University of Ilorin, the N1billion career support and cleaner energy solution in the university of Ibadan and the N1billion tertiary infrastructure grant awarded to the Nnamdi Azikiwe University.

Health and Housing – which is another strong determination of well-being – are other areas that Abdul Samad Rabiu’s philanthropy is having far-reaching tellings.

The construction of a 30-bed hospital for the Nigerian Customs Service in Bauchi,  the renovation of ten Tuberculosis Directly Observed Treatment Short-Course (DOTS) centers in identified Primary Health care centers across seven states in Nigeria –  in partnership with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) -,  the construction of 120 family housing units (Corporal and Below Quarters) for the Nigerian Army in Abuja, building of the state-of-the-art 2.5 Billion Naira Oncology Centre in Kwara state – part of the 10 billion Naira in grants of 2.5 billion Naira each to 4 States as part of the sustainable development scheme – are some of philanthropists interventions in these spheres.

A globally acknowledged king of commerce, it goes without saying that the pioneer President of the France Nigeria Business Council is immeasurably contributing to the nation’s economy through industrialization and manufacturing.

With BUA Group – the leading foods, infrastructure, mining and manufacturing conglomerate Headquartered in Nigeria with diversified investments spanning key business sectors of the African economy, Rabiu has massively invested in manufacturing, especially in cement production, sugar refining, and edible oils – thereby contributing in great measures to Nigeria’s industrialization efforts.

And, the impact? It has helped improve local production capabilities and enhance economic growth by limiting the need for imported goods.

Two recent developments attest to BUA Group’s strong play in the Nigerian busines space, in manufacturing – BUA Cement just announced a strong revenue growth of 27.4% to N460 billion (2022: N361 billion), resulting from its increasing market share and in Production – BUA Foods newly signed an agreement with IMAS, a prominent Turkish flour milling equipment manufacturer, to build four (4) state-of-the-art wheat and flour milling factories with a cumulative milling capacity of 3,200 tonnes per day.

Some of the pivotal gains of these continuing impressive feats, also tremendously boosting the economy are – job creation and support for small and medium scale enterprises (SMEs).

It is instructive to note that the widely affirmed status of BUA Group as the biggest employer of labour in Northwest Nigeria is a clear window into how much its operations have directly and indirectly reduced unemployment across the country.

The group, which employs thousands across the country, is also flourishing the small and medium scale enterprises through supply chains and partnerships – providing them with contracts and business opportunities.

This support soars the SME sector, which is a key driver of economic growth and employment in Nigeria.

In strongly promoting economic diversification – vital for sustainable growth –  away from oil, through his diverse business initiatives, it is noteworthy to mention that Abdul Samad Rabiu is also at the forefront of pushing innovation and technology advancement in the process of doing business through the modern technology and innovation adopted in BUA Group’s operations, especially in manufacturing and refining processes.

BUA Group’s inking a deal with long time partner, CBMI  in July 2024 to build a new high-tech BUA Cement factory, that will produce three (3) million metric tonnes of cement per year in Ososo, Edo state – among other things – speaks to this.

Aside exportation of goods, the group is also a top contributor to the nation’s foreign exchange earnings through BUA Ports & Terminals- a concessionaire of Terminal ‘B’ of the Nigerian Ports Authority (Rivers Port), in Rivers State, Nigeria.

The Port – secured through a highly competitive bidding process under the Public Enterprise (Privatization & Commercialization) Act No. 28 of 1999 – with well trained personnel, competitive tariffs and customer service to beat and copy which increasing make it preferred place for merchants.
