The Lagos State Government has announced the cancellation of the 2025 edition of the Greater Lagos Fiesta, the annual New Year’s Eve countdown event traditionally held on December 31.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu approved the decision, according to a statement issued on Tuesday by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Gboyega Akosile.

Instead of the Greater Lagos Fiesta, also known as Countdown 2026, the governor urged Lagos residents to spend the period in personal prayers for the nation, the state and the people of Lagos.

Sanwo-Olu called on residents to pray for continued prosperity, leadership, peace, productivity and the general wellbeing of the state, noting that collective reflection and prayer were more appropriate at this time.

He expressed optimism about the year ahead, assuring Lagosians that 2026 holds great promise for both the state and Nigeria, and encouraged residents to continue living in peace and harmony.

“On behalf of my family, I wish every resident of our dear state a happy and prosperous new year,” the governor said.

“I want to assure you all that the year 2026 will be a better year for us in the state, as our administration is determined to work twice as hard to deliver the goods for the residents of the state.”

The Greater Lagos Fiesta has, in previous years, served as a major end-of-year celebration featuring music, entertainment and fireworks across multiple locations in the state.
