Why NURTW Agents Are Still Operating In Lagos State Despite Suspension

in the face of the supremacy tussle

“You can’t just collapse the structure like, the value it offers is beyond measure” information at hand indicate why agents of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) still collect tolls despite the suspension of its activities by the Lagos State Government.

The Lagos state commissioner for information announced the suspension of the NURTW with the assertion that “The Government has a duty to ensure the safety of lives and property of all Lagosians and visitors. Therefore, there is an urgent need to douse the unnecessary tension generated by the leadership tussle in the NURTW and protect the citizenry from the likely fallout of the situation.

After considering the provisions of the law, the Government hereby suspends the activities of NURTW, which must cease to operate in all parks and garages in Lagos State

The announcement was based in the face of the supremacy tussle between MC Oluomo (real name Musiliu Akinsanya) the chairman of the Lagos state chapter of the NURTW and its national president Ibikunle Baruwa.

SocietyNow.Ng, however, gathered that despite the ban agents of the NURTW are still operating in plain clothes.

“Because there is greater harm in outrightly enforcing the suspension” SocietyNow.Ng gathered.

Information at hand revealed that the NURTW in Lagos state is the means of livelihood to many characters who would ordinarily have taken to crime as well as the source of daily bread to many ‘repented” underground figures.

“The reality is that the NURTW is the social security service helping to keep Lagos safe behind the scene. The stakeholders know this and that is why Lagos quickly moved in to manage the situation. What is happening is managing the situation and continuing to keep Lagos safe.” SocietyNow.Ng gathered.

SocietyNow.Ng gathered this development is not new. Suspension of Union activities in parts of Lagos in the past has seen agents of the NURTW operating in plain clothes but with extra care.

“That is what is happening. They will operate with extra care and the stakeholders will allow them for the higher good of preventing an increase in the crime rate by totally shutting them down” SocietyNow.Ng gathered.

“Governance is striking a very delicate balance. It is not all white and black as the intellectuals usually theorize, what is happening is the government taking care of the bad guys for the citizens to be able to sleep with their eyes closed, at least relatively ” SocietyNow.Ng further learned.

The statement by commissioner Omotosho announcing the suspension of NURTW activities in Lagos state telling stated that “The Government will set up a Committee to immediately take control of the parks and garages. Members of the committee will be key stakeholders in the sector. “
