Why Iyabo Obasanjo Is Still Popular In Ogun Political Circle

Iyabo Obasanjo is still a popular name in the political circle of Ogun State according to the information at hand.

“She remains a reference point in gathering followers across political lines with talk of the town helping hands” those who should insist.

Iyabo, the daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo was a former Commissioner and later Senator in Ogun State.

She represented Ogun Central in the Senate from 5 June 2007 to 6 June 2011 as a member of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

And, her generosity and touching life gestures as commissioner in the Government of Gbenga Daniel and a later Senator in Ogun State earned her the famous slogan “Kosi omo bi Iyabo’ (No child – in this case person – like Iyabo).

SocietyNow.Ng’s checks revealed the slogan is back on the lips of many as comparisons are made of how much impact Iyabo Obasanjo, and others who were elected after her as Ogun Central Senators, brought to bear.

After Iyabo Obasanjo came Olugbenga Obadara, Lanre Tejuosho, Ibikunle Amosun and incumbent – Afolabi Shuaib, respectively, as Senators representing Ogun Central.

While there is consensus that they all brought different degrees of interventions and empowerments to bear in the Senatorial district, there is a firm agreement that Obasanjo operated the most open-door policy and accommodated all comers irrespective of party affiliation.

Added checks revealed that Iyabo Obasanjo’s popularity was built on massive gestures that included car gifts, creating means of earning livelihoods, and community projects.

These are and more soared her into reckoning and reflections on them have returned the former Senator onto the lips of many in recent times.

“And she was always available to meet with people irrespective of party affiliations, that really helped her. Amosun is the other person in the lineup of past Ogun Central Senators who stood out withkind of followings he commanded but this is more largely due to the influence he mustered in the eight years he served as Governor of Ogun State. Despite her immense popularity, Iyao Obasanjo was denied a second term in office largely through interference from her father, (then outgoing President) Olusegun Obasanjo who had the political party – PDP – in a vice grip.

The circumstances that denied her a return to the Senate forced the epidemiologist to return abroad with the declaration that she was no longer interested in contesting elections in Nigeria.
