The federal government has reaffirmed its commitment to religious freedom and the protection of all citizens in response to a recent statement by the United States of America on the state of religious liberty in Nigeria.

In a statement issued on Saturday by Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the government said Nigeria remains steadfast in its resolve to confront violent extremism and to defend the rights of every citizen regardless of religion, race, or creed.

“The Federal Government of Nigeria will continue to defend all citizens, irrespective of race, creed, or religion,” the statement read. “We remain committed in our resolve to tackle the violent extremism that is fueled by special interests who have helped drive such decay and division in countries across the intersecting West African and Sahel regions.”

The ministry noted that Nigeria, like the United States, celebrates diversity as one of its greatest strengths. It described the country as a God-fearing nation built on faith, tolerance, and inclusion, values it said align with the rules-based international order.

While expressing appreciation for the longstanding ties between both countries, the government said it trusts that the United States will remain a close ally as Nigeria continues to work with partners committed to peace, stability, and democracy.

“The Federal Republic of Nigeria, under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, will maintain a laser focus and steadfast commitment to all partners who believe in genuine peace, stability, freedom, and democracy,” the ministry added.

The statement also paid tribute to members of the armed forces for their ongoing efforts in combating violent extremism and restoring peace in affected communities.

“We mourn all the victims of violent extremism and salute our armed forces as they continue to fight against vicious but cowardly foes,” the government said.

The federal government reaffirmed that Nigeria will remain a nation where faith and freedom coexist, insisting that its commitment to defending every Nigerian remains unwavering.
