Tinubu Gives Finance Minister Deadline To Come Up With Acceptable Minimum Wage Numbers
“is determined to go with what the committee has said,”
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has given the MInister of Finance, Wale Edun a deadline on coming up with the tempelate for an acceptable minimum wage for all stakeholders on the heels of the temporary suspension of the nationwide strike embarked by the Labour Congress on Monday.
“The president has directed the minister of finance to do the numbers and get back to him between today and tomorrow so that we can have figures ready for negotiation with labour. Let me say that the president is determined to go with what the committee has said, and he’s also looking at the welfare of Nigerians” the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris disclosed on Tuesday, June 4, 2024, after meeting with the President along with other team members negotiating with the organised labour.
The NLC crippled the nation’s economy on Monday June 3,2024, with the shutdown of the national grid providing electricity, airports across the country and government offices. Government owned education institutions including primary and secondary schools were not left out.
Emergency meetings between the leaders of the NLC and the representatives of the Federal Government at different places – National Assembly and Office of The Secretary to the Government of the Federation inclusive – resulted in the suspension of the strike for a week based on agreement that the Federal Government would come up with an offer better that than the N60.000 minimum wage that was rejected.
Part of the agreement is that Labour Congress and Federal Government representatives will continue unceasing meetings until a mutually beneficial wage is agreed on.
The agreement was reached on Tuesday morning and the Minister of Information and National Orientation along with other members of the government negotiating team met with President Tinubu in Aso Rock to brief him.
Speaking with the media after the meeting, Idris further added that “The government is not an opponent of labour discussions or wage increases..
“All of us will work together assiduously within the next one week to ensure that we have a new wage for Nigeria that is acceptable, sustainable, and also realistic,”
