Though he just won re-election, talks of who succeeds Governor Dapo Abiodun have reached a fever pitch high in Ogun state.

Abiodun won a second term in March 2023 – the win is still the subject of litigation – and is expected to end the new tenure in 2027.

The initial claims were of a plan within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) that fellow party, who contributed in no small measure to his electoral win in 2019 and 2023, Senator Solomon Olamilkan Adeola would succeed Abiodun.

However, assertions appear to have gone with the winds based on the number of factions and groups throwing up the names of preferred successors.

The latest name on the wall is Sharafadeen Ishola, the former Minister for Mines and Steel.

Ishola is labeled the choice of growing numbers within the formidable statewide political structure of Senator Gbenga Daniel.

He was the Secretary to the State Government during the entire of Daniel as the Governor of Ogun state.

Added information revealed that the core of those backing the former Minister as the next Governor of Ogun state are former People’s Democratic Party (PDP) members now in APC.

They are complemented by some of the loyalists of former Governor Ibikunle Amosun.

Amosun is said to have shown interest in the idea.

Both Amosun and Daniel are at odds with Governor Abiodun.

Sharafa Ishola’s most recent appointment was the nation’s ambassador to the United Kingdom during the immediate past administration of President Muhammadu Buhari.

The 63-year-old is from the large vote area of Ogun Central.
