Saraki Tells Way Out Of Akpabio, Natasha-Akpoti Sexual Harassment Mess
to uphold the integrity of the National Assembly.
Former Senate President and Waziri of Ilorin, Abubakar Bukola Saraki, has weighed in on the controversy between Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Kogi Central Senator, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, calling for a transparent investigation to uphold the integrity of the National Assembly.
In a statement, Saraki expressed sadness over the situation, warning that the dispute could tarnish the Senate’s image if not properly handled.
He stressed that the institution, rather than individuals, must be protected, urging all involved—including supporters within and outside the chamber—to exercise caution in their actions and reactions.
Saraki emphasized the need for due process, advocating for an open and transparent investigation by the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions. He recalled his own experience during the 8th Senate when he faced allegations regarding an official vehicle and willingly subjected himself to scrutiny, allowing a fair and open inquiry to clear his name.
“The leadership of the 10th Senate should follow this precedent,” he stated, arguing that Akpabio and Akpoti-Uduaghan must fully cooperate with the investigation to establish the truth. He insisted that the Senate must not be seen as an institution that tolerates sexual harassment, gender bias, abuse of office, or disregard for parliamentary rules.
Saraki clarified that his intervention was not to take sides but to ensure that the matter is handled in a manner that preserves the Senate’s sanctity. He urged democracy lovers to work toward strengthening the institution, warning that no leader or member should be allowed to undermine its credibility.
As tensions escalate, Saraki’s call for an impartial probe adds to the pressure on the Senate to ensure that the allegations and counterclaims are addressed with fairness and transparency.
