Remi Tinubu Wades Into Query To Nursing Students Over Mischievous Welcome Song
expressed trust in the management of the Delta State College of Nursing Sciences
The Office of the First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria has urged the Delta State College of Nursing Sciences to handle with fairness the matter involving students who participated in a playful chant during the Renewed Hope Initiative’s donation of 10,000 professional kits to midwives in the South-South zone.
In a statement signed by the Senior Special Assistant to the First Lady on Media, Busola Kukoyi, the office acknowledged that it had been made aware of a video circulating on social media.
The video, which captured moments from the event held at the Dome Event Centre in Asaba, Delta State, on March 25, 2025, showed enthusiastic chants welcoming both the First Lady of Delta State and the First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu.
The event aimed to encourage midwives nationwide to reduce infant and maternal mortality rates in Nigeria.
The statement expressed deep appreciation for the warm reception accorded to the First Lady by the Delta State Government, the people of Delta State, and the enthusiastic participation of nurses, midwives, women groups, and student nurses.
However, the statement noted that a segment of the video, allegedly recorded by some students, depicted a spontaneous and playful variation of the welcome song – “Na Our mama be this” from the anchor and “Na your mama be this” from the students (This is our mother – MC, This is your mother – Students response).
“It has since come to the attention of the First Lady’s office that some students of the Delta State College of Nursing Sciences have been issued a query over their involvement in the chants” the statement disclosed.
While acknowledging the right of institutions to uphold discipline, the Office of the First Lady emphasized the importance of recognizing that students, in moments of excitement, often express themselves in a lighthearted and jovial manner.
The statement underscored that educational institutions should foster an environment where students feel safe to express themselves while maintaining decorum.
“The First Lady’s visit was intended to inspire and uplift healthcare professionals, and it is our hope that this event remains a positive and motivating experience for all involved,” the statement read.
The Office of the First Lady expressed trust in the management of the Delta State College of Nursing Sciences to handle the matter with understanding and fairness, ensuring that students continue to thrive in an environment that balances discipline with free expression.
“We trust that the Delta State College of Nursing Sciences will handle this matter with understanding and fairness, ensuring that students continue to thrive in an environment that balances discipline with free expression” the statement rounded off.
