a room of power responding to an announcement that had just rewritten expectations

The photograph has since become one of the most talked-about images from the December 13, 2025 BUA Night of Excellence, freezing a moment that many guests say perfectly captured the mood inside the Eko Hotel Convention Centre that night.

In the image, Abdul Samad Rabiu, founder and chairman of BUA Group, sits calmly at a round table as several high-profile guests,  including forbes rated Africa’s richest – Aliko Dangote, stand around him in what appears to be spontaneous applause.

The posture, observers say, reflected not hierarchy but reaction — a room of power responding to an announcement that had just rewritten expectations around corporate reward in Nigeria by one of their own.

Moments before the picture was taken, Rabiu had unveiled what has since been described as a never-before-seen act of corporate gratitude: the distribution of ₦30 billion in cash gifts to 510 BUA employees, outside their official salaries and entitlements.

The announcement instantly changed the atmosphere in the hall, drawing audible gasps, emotional reactions and standing ovations from staff and guests alike.

The event, which began earlier in the evening with a cocktail reception featuring long-service plaques, certificates and cultural performances from across Nigeria, had initially followed a familiar corporate awards script. By the time the main programme commenced at 7pm, however, it was clear the night would be anything but routine.

Only 41 of the 510 beneficiaries were invited to the stage to collect their cheques, a decision organisers said was made to manage time. The breakdown included recipients of ₦100 million, ₦200 million, ₦250 million, ₦500 million and ₦1 billion, alongside one special award whose cash value was not announced. The remaining 469 staff members were scheduled to receive their gifts at their offices days later.

As names were called, reactions varied from quiet disbelief to open tears. One long-serving staff member raised his hands in prayer before dancing to the stage after being announced as a ₦500 million recipient.

Another, who received ₦1 billion after nearly four decades of service, was so overcome with emotion that he could barely speak.

The photograph circulating online was taken around this period of heightened emotion, when applause rippled through the room not for a musical performance or keynote speech, but for the scale of appreciation being shown to workers. Guests present at the event included senior figures from politics, banking, industry and the creative sector, many of whom are themselves accustomed to commanding rooms rather than rising in reaction.

The definition of commerce, who attended the event with members of his family, later described BUA as more than a business, telling staff that the company’s true strength “has always been its people.” He pledged that as the group expands its capacity, commissions new plants and invests in advanced technologies, employees would continue to grow alongside it.

Entertainment performances by Sir Shina Peters, Teni and Alternate Sound later closed the night, but for many in attendance, the defining moment had already passed. The image of wealth standing in applause around a seated chairman quickly became symbolic of the evening — a visual shorthand for a night that has since been described as the talk of the town and a rare redefinition of corporate gratitude in Nigeria.

Checks also show that the gesture was consistent with Rabiu’s history of rewarding staff beyond convention. In July 2021, during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, he announced a share-bonus gift worth nearly ₦2 billion to BUA employees in recognition of their commitment during a difficult period.

Still, those present say the December 13, 2025 event was different. As the photograph suggests, it was a moment when applause did not follow power — power followed appreciation.
