complemented by two special recognition awards

At the 10th Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) press conference held on Tuesday, March 12, 2024, at the MultiChoice Studios in Ilupeju, organisers announced changes to the prestigious event’s award categories for its landmark edition.

Under the new format, the number of award categories has been reduced to 27, complemented by two special recognition awards. Notably, performance awards have undergone significant streamlining, with categories such as Best Actor and Best Actress in a Lead Role now encompassing a broader scope.

In a departure from past editions, winners in these categories will be selected by a jury rather than through public voting. This shift seeks to ensure a more objective and discerning evaluation of talent while maintaining the credibility and integrity of the awards. Deloitte will continue to oversee the voting process and verify the results to uphold transparency.

According to Busola Tejumola, Executive Head of Content and Channels, West Africa, MultiChoice, the restructuring reflects a concerted effort to modernise the awards and bring them in line with global standards and practices observed by leading industry awards shows. “We have reimagined the AMVCAs to make the awards more reflective of the times we are in, and it is clear the industry was excited with these changes,” she concluded.

The press conference drew a diverse array of attendees, including stakeholders, media executives, and stars from the African entertainment industry. Among the notable personalities present were Ireti Doyle, IK Osakioduwa, Ebuka Obi-Uchendu, Jidekene Achufusi, Bisola Aiyeola, Sharon Ooja, Ini Dima-Okojie, Uti Nwachukwu and many more. Other stars at the event included Akin Faminu, Ray Adeka, Modesinuola Ogundiwin, and JSmile Uhuru.

With anticipation building for the milestone 10th anniversary edition, the organisers will announce nominees across all Africa Magic channels on March 24 at 8 pm. While Young Filmmakers & Content Creators’ event and the Opening Night will hold on May 10, the main awards event unfolds on May 11, 2024.
