The political machinery of former Ogun State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, has been placed on statewide alert as manoeuvres intensify over who will emerge as the next governor in 2027.

Amosun, the immediate past Senator representing Ogun Central, controls the SIA political family—one of the four most formidable political structures in the state. Widely known by its acronym, SIA (Senator Ibikunle Amosun), the bloc cuts across party lines and remains a major force in Ogun politics.

Sources say Amosun is working quietly to ensure he has a decisive say in the succession to Governor Dapo Abiodun, although he has yet to anoint a preferred candidate.

“There is intense political activity, but nothing has been concluded. Everyone is on alert, waiting for direction on who the structure will eventually back,” an insider said.

Governor Abiodun, who clashed politically with Amosun in both the 2019 and 2023 elections, is also positioning himself to influence who succeeds him. However, political history appears to favour the former governor.

“No sitting governor has successfully handpicked a successor in Ogun State. Amosun himself failed to do so in 2019 when Abiodun emerged,” checks revealed.

Meanwhile, Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, popularly known as Yayi, has emerged as the long-running frontrunner in the race. Like Amosun, he controls one of the four dominant political structures in the state.

The remaining blocs are led by former Governor Gbenga Daniel—currently at odds with Abiodun over the Ogun East Senate seat ahead of 2027—and Ladi Adebutu. Adebutu is the only member of the quartet from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), while the others are chieftains of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

“There is no consensus yet among APC power brokers on the next governor, while Adebutu is believed to be exploring a return to the APC,” a party source disclosed.

With Amosun also being linked to a possible return to the Senate, insiders say his political structure remains fully mobilised—awaiting the final signal on how it will shape the 2027 governorship contest in Ogun State.
