Minister of communication’s Adebayo Shittu’s has suffered serial “bloody nose” in attempts to latch on to public confidence crisis facing President Muhammadu Buhari to his own end.

Shittu from Oyo state has designs to become the successor to outgoing state helmsman, Abiola Ajimobi.

But he does not have the support of the incumbent to achieve his ambition.

He is said to have adopted the game plan of riding on the wave of presidential support to become All Progressives Congress candidate in the state.

It is given in many quarters that, with the kind of strong support the party enjoys in the state, the flagbearers chance of becoming the next governor is “virtually” assured.

Sources, however, disclose Shittu’s attempt to prove his loyalty to the Presidency by latching on to the ongoing public confidence crisis engulfing President Muhammadu Buhari has backfired.

Rather than help his cause, his attempts have so backfired that it has further damaged his chances and pushed him away from the presidency.

On Saturday the minister of communication inaugurated the Southwest Zonal Office of the Buhari/ Osinbajo Campaign Organisation in Ibadan, Oyo state, despite the fact that the President has not officially declared intention to re-contest.

It was such a gallant flop that all the major stakeholders from the zone in the APC absented selves from the occasion.

The development greatly took points away from perception in the state that the minister enjoys the great support that would help him become governor at the national level – and in the presidency that he wields strong clout in his zone.

The attention generated by this development has not died down before the minister suffered another major misadventure.

On the heels of a scathing special statement by former President Olusegun Obasanjo that incumbent Muhammadu Buhari should not seek re-election in the face of dismissal first-term administration, Shittu stormed the Federal Executive Council meeting wearing President Buhari’s re-election campaign cap.

And not only that, he went to the meeting with “Ghana Must Go Bags” of same campaign cap to distribute to FEC members and others in the presidency.

Obviously conscious of how damaging the move would be in face of unfavourable public opinion further influenced by Obasanjo’s special statement of barely 24hrs old, the Secretary to the Government of Federation Boss Mustapha stopped Shittu from distributing the campaign caps bearing the slogan “Continuity 19: Muhammadu Buhari/ Osinbajo” at the FEC meeting.

It is believed, just like the misadventure of a Zonal Office Inauguration the FEC misstep in no way endeared Shittu to the Presidency and the major players there – and naturally has not pushed him nearer his gubernatorial ambition as planned.
