Recently, the President of Gabon, Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, conferred the country’s top honour on one of Africa’s leading investors, Tony Elumelu.

Elumelu was decorated as a Commander in the National Order of Gabonese Merit in recognition of his contribution to Africa’s economic development—especially in youth entrepreneurship and infrastructure growth in Gabon and across the continent.

Checks revealed that this development is the latest in a series of recognitions that reflect the far-reaching influence of the champion of entrepreneurship, who is building pathways to prosperity across Africa through determined efforts to create a better continent.

In 2020, the founder of the Tony Elumelu Foundation (TEF) was named one of TIME’s 100 Most Influential People. The listing recognised his relentless push to empower African entrepreneurs through his foundation and his role in shaping the continent’s economic future, focusing on inclusive and sustainable development.

TEF has since helped lift nearly two million Africans out of poverty, provided an estimated 2.5 million young people with access to training via TEFConnect, and disbursed more than $100 million in direct funding to thousands of African entrepreneurs. These businesses are estimated to have created over 1.5 million direct and indirect jobs and contributed roughly $3.2 billion in revenue to the continent’s economy.

Before the TIME 100 listing, the master entrepreneur was named Philanthropist of the Year by the All-Africa Business Leaders Awards (AABLA) in 2018.

The award, presented by CNBC Africa, celebrated Elumelu’s transformative philanthropic work—particularly through TEF—which empowered thousands of African startups with funding, training, and mentorship at the time.

In 2019, the Chairman of United Bank for Africa (UBA)—a financial services group operating in 20 African countries and abroad—was awarded the Corporate Citizenship award by the United States Chamber of Commerce. This recognition highlighted Elumelu’s commitment to responsible business practices and his contribution to economic advancement in Africa, underlining how he leverages business leadership for broader social good.

Also in 2019, the man who transformed UBA—which now serves the banking needs of over 45 million customers globally—from a single-country bank into a pan-African financial powerhouse with subsidiaries across the continent and in France, the United States, and the United Kingdom, was conferred with the National Productivity Order of Merit (NIPOM) award. It recognised Elumelu’s contributions to national productivity, job creation, and economic development through banking and entrepreneurship initiatives.

Before stepping down as Managing Director of UBA in 2010 to establish Heirs Holdings—his family-owned investment company committed to transforming Africa through long-term investments in strategic sectors—Elumelu was named African Banker of the Year by African Banker magazine in 2008.

The award honoured him for steering UBA’s growth into a pan-African banking giant, serving millions across the continent and strengthening Africa’s financial sector.

UBA recently declared a N3.2 trillion gross profit and completed a N251 billion oversubscribed rights issue, a testament to the bank’s continued growth under Elumelu’s leadership as Chairman.

Many who are familiar with Elumelu are, however, not surprised by his growing list of feats and recognitions.

As far back as 2003, he was recognised as one of the World Economic Forum’s Young Global Leaders. According to the organisers, Elumelu’s participation in WEF forums demonstrates his influence in shaping global economic discourse and Africa’s place within it.

The philanthropist’s Africans Rising Leadership Award 17 years later, in 2019, affirms the consistency and focus he brings to all that he does.

That award celebrated Elumelu’s commitment to advancing pan-African entrepreneurship and his role as a unifying figure who champions African-led solutions to African challenges.

The extra-value impact of the Chairman of one of Nigeria’s largest conglomerates—Transcorp, which recorded N143.7 billion in Q1 2025—was also acknowledged as far back as 2017 with the United Nations SDG Influencer Honour.

Elumelu was recognised as an SDG Advocate for his contribution to the Sustainable Development Goals, especially Goal 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), through initiatives that promote entrepreneurship and financial inclusion.

The ECOWAS Regional Champion for Entrepreneurship award in 2020 further accentuated and validated his efforts toward actualising his economic philosophy of Africapitalism—which advocates for the private sector, especially entrepreneurs, as catalysts for Africa’s social and economic development.

This award, presented by the Economic Community of West African States, acknowledged Elumelu’s role in fostering regional integration and economic development through enterprise support across West Africa.

Elumelu invalidated the old saying that “a prophet is not recognised at home” with the honour bestowed on him by the Nigerian government in 2022.

He was conferred with the Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON) in October of that year—a testament to his significant impact in business, finance, and nation-building via investments and youth empowerment.

Despite these widespread honours that testify to his far-reaching impact, sources confirm that Elumelu is not slowing down in his passionate push for shared prosperity in a better world.

He is currently taking the message of Africapitalism, the power of youth entrepreneurship, and the importance of infrastructure-led growth across global venues—while continuing to make fortune-yielding contributions to investments that are putting smiles on stakeholders’ faces through strong returns.
