Kwankwaso Raises Fresh Security Concerns, Affirms Confidence In New Defence Minister
warning that recent developments point to a dangerous drift
Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has raised fresh concerns over Nigeria’s worsening security situation, warning that recent developments point to a dangerous drift that must be halted urgently to safeguard national stability.
The former Minister of Defence said he is deeply worried about the escalating insecurity across the country, noting that the responsibility to address the crisis rests squarely on the Federal Government, working in synergy with states, local councils, and other critical stakeholders. But he expressed regret that the authorities appear overwhelmed, allowing measures that have now produced unintended consequences.
Kwankwaso faulted the increasing reliance on state-backed vigilante groups with little or no professional training, saying the approach, though well-meaning, has contributed to the proliferation of small arms and light weapons nationwide.
According to him, the situation has emboldened individuals and political actors to form private militias, threatening the already fragile peace.
He also expressed serious concern about rising incidents of ethnic and regional profiling, warning that no Nigerian should be harassed, arrested, or victimised because of their identity.
The popular politician described recent reports of harassment and torture of citizens in parts of the country as disturbing, adding that inflammatory rhetoric and hate speech on social media are further deepening divisions.
Kwankwaso said these trends pose a direct threat to national unity and cohesion, urging the Federal Government to act decisively before the situation deteriorates further. As a former Chairman of the Committee on the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons, he said the ease with which weapons now circulate across Nigeria is both alarming and unacceptable.
Despite his concerns, Kwankwaso conveyed strong optimism about the leadership of the newly appointed Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa. He congratulated the retired military chief, expressing confidence in his competence and experience. With the right political will and support, he said, the new minister is well positioned to restore security and stability across the country.
