The Ogun State Government under the leadership of Governor Dapo Abiodun has announced the cancellation of activities earlier scheduled to mark the 2026 Democracy Day celebration, opting instead for what it described as a “special and reflective” observance of the national event.

The announcement was contained in a statement signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Tokunbo Talabi, on behalf of the state government.

Planned Activities Cancelled
According to the statement, programmes initially outlined for the June 12 commemoration “will no longer hold in their originally planned format.”

The government explained that the decision followed “careful consideration of prevailing national circumstances” and the need for “collective responsibility and sensitivity at this time.”

While the statement did not elaborate on the specific circumstances that informed the decision, it stressed that the significance of June 12 to Nigeria’s democratic journey remains undiminished.

A Time for Reflection
The state government noted that June 12 continues to represent a defining moment in the nation’s democratic history and a symbol of the people’s commitment to democratic governance.

“While June 12 remains a significant milestone in Nigeria’s democratic history and a symbol of the people’s enduring commitment to democratic ideals, the State Government has deemed it appropriate to mark the occasion in a more solemn and restrained manner,” the statement said.
It added that the observance would serve as an opportunity for citizens to reflect on the progress made under democratic rule and honour those who made sacrifices for the nation’s democracy.

“The observance will provide an opportunity for reflection on the gains of democracy, the sacrifices of its heroes, and the collective responsibility of all citizens to continue supporting good governance, peace, and development,” the government stated.

Appeal for Understanding

The Ogun State Government expressed appreciation to public servants, stakeholders, development partners and residents for their understanding and cooperation.

“The Government appreciates the understanding, cooperation, and continued support of all stakeholders and residents as we commemorate this important national day,” the statement added.

It further thanked the people of Ogun State for what it described as their unwavering commitment to the state’s progress, unity and prosperity.

“We thank the people of Ogun State for their unwavering commitment to the progress, unity, and prosperity of our dear State.”
