The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has warned Nigerians against a fraudulent publication circulating online and purporting to be a special announcement by the commission on governorship candidates in six states.

The commission, in a public notice, described the publication as fake, insisting that it did not originate from INEC.

The affected states are Zamfara, Gombe, Delta, Plateau, Yobe and Kano.

INEC urged members of the public to disregard the publication and refrain from sharing it, warning that it could mislead Nigerians on electoral matters.

“The Commission wishes to categorically inform the general public that the publication is FAKE and did not originate from INEC,” the notice stated.

The electoral body clarified that any information suggesting it had issued a special announcement concerning governorship candidates in the six states was false.

It advised Nigerians to obtain electoral information only through its official communication channels, including its website, verified social media accounts and news portal.

“The public is advised to rely solely on official notices, press releases, and other information issued through the Commission’s verified communication channels,” INEC said.

The commission also called on Nigerians to remain vigilant and verify electoral information before accepting or circulating it.
And, urged members of the public who require clarification to contact its call centre, 0700-2255-4632, or use its short code, 4632.

INEC reiterated its commitment to keeping Nigerians accurately informed and urged the public to disregard the fraudulent publication.
