Governor Obaseki says he is “taken aback by the extent of illegal and illicit operations” of illegal miners in parts of Edo State. And has declared that the “government will show its full might and force” to contain the situation.

Obaseki made the declaration after on-the-spot-assessment at borrow pits in the Obagie N’ Evbosa axis, in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area of Edo state.

The Edo State Governor made his position known in a narrative he put on social media that reads…

“I am taken aback by the extent of illegal and illicit operations going on at borrow pits in the Obagie N’ Evbosa axis, in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area of the state.

These illegal operators have no respect for law and order, and they are challenging the government. The government will show its full might and force. We cannot continue at this rate because their activities pose a serious threat to the environment and lives in the neighbouring communities.

We are issuing this and sending it as a warning to the operators and the federal mining officers in the state who permit this illegality and give approval and authorisation, that we will arrest and deal with them in Edo State. They must cease all illegal activities until we agree on the areas that can be borrowed.”

Obaseki put up the narrative on Wednesday, June 19, 2024.
