“He is firmly planting himself in the future” is the consensus of opinion about the Senator representing Ogun East, Gbenga Daniel.

The former Governor of Ogun state from May 29, 2003, to May 29, 2011, won election to the Senator in February 2023 with a record breaking win.

The influential politician also known as OGD (acronym for Otunba Gbenga Daniel) secured the highest-votes-ever to win a senatorial election – 115,147 votes.

He won all the 9 local government areas (LGA) in the senatorial district, including Ijebu North, Odogbolu, Remo North, Sagamu, Ijebu North-East, Ijebu Ode, Ijebu East, Ikenne and Ogun Waterside.

His nearest challenger with 58,708 votes did not come anywhere near.

Multiple checks, however, revealed that since he was sworn-in on June 13, 2023, OGD has been carrying on as if he is still campaigning for an election with interventions.

According to those in the know, outside is legislative duties, Senator Daniel has been touching the lives of individuals and communities.

He said to be running health care programme scheme that was recently highlighted with free eye treatment and eye glasses to those in need.

The Senator is described as a major backer of farmers with the provision of multi-faced support that includes funding and training listed as some of his doings.

It is also to his credit that he was talk of the town for ensuring victims of flood in Ogun East get relief from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).

“For someone who won election by a record-breaking number, he is going about his business like he is the underdog. It is already discouraging a lot of people interested in his seat” insiders say.

The Senator is the owner of one of the most formidable political structures in Ogun state and is at the heart of the collaboration to determine who succeeds his party man, Dapo Abiodun as Governor.

Formerly one of the most prominent and well-connected players in the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). Daniel left the PDP after 22 years to join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2021 and has transformed into decision maker at the state and national levels.

The next election that will place the Ogun East senatorial seat up for grabs will take place in 2027.
