It was a deeply emotional moment.
Abimbola Ashiru, Chairman of Odu’a Investment Company, finally gave in to the grief of losing his best friend, Segun Awolowo Jnr, on December 5, 2025.

The moment came during the final leg of a carefully curated three-day farewell for the grandson of iconic national leader, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, held at Our Saviour’s Church, Ikoyi.

Awolowo jnr— long regarded as Ashiru’s “twin brother” — passed away on November 20, 2025.

Ashiru had maintained a composed front through the burial rites: a Night of Tribute on Monday, December 1; a Wake-Keep on Wednesday, December 3 at Harbour Point, Victoria Island; and the funeral service on Friday.

Standing alongside close friends like Jide Coker, Prince Lanre Tejuosho, Yinka Ajayi and Adewunmi Ogunsanya, he was a steady pillar throughout.

But as the service drew to a close on Friday, the finality of parting with the friend he spent most Sundays with overwhelmed him — and Ashiru broke down in tears.

He was comforted by Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, also a member of their close-knit circle.

Segun Awolowo, who served eight years as Executive Director of the Nigerian Export Promotion Council and was President of the National Trade Promotion Organisation until his passing, continues to be remembered for countless quiet good deeds done away from public view.
