Gbenga Daniel Lobbies Amaechi To Beg President Jonathan
Out of favour former governor of Ogun state, Otunba Gbenga Daniel is striving to stage a comeback into the good books of the powers that be.
Sources divulged that the architect of his party’s loss of the control of government in Ogun state has initiated pleas that President Goodluck Jonathan forgive him and pave way for his acceptance back into the mainstream of his party, People’s Democratic Party.
Daniel is said to have made the moves via his friend and incumbent Chairman of the Governors forum, Rotimi Amaechi of the Rivers state.
Findings revealed that he wants to ride on the influence of Ameachi’s stature to achieve his objective.
The former governor became a reject in the Presidency when he shunned the President pleas in the last general elections to reconcile with warring factions in his state and help his party retain power in Ogun state.
Otunba Daniel, based on protracted battles he waged against multiple elements in his party- including former president, Olusegun Obasanjo- that saw him in losing out in the power equation, had gone ahead to sponsor another political party, PPN (People’s Party of Nigeria).
He had moved his candidate and supporters within the PDP to PPN and put state resources at the disposal of the party to give it muscle.
The result was the splitting of PDP’s vote- a situation that paved way for rival party, Action Congress of Nigeria to emerge victorious with incumbent Governor, Ibikunle Amosun as Daniel’s successor.
Strangely Daniel’s was the southwest coordinator for President Jonathan’s campaign while he was engaged in the actions tagged ‘inimical’ to all that his party stood for.
His action and the result had transformed the former governor a pariah within the PDP- and with nothing to negotiate with outside his party, a castaway within political circles as well.
He is trying to reverse this development by lobbying Governor Amaechi to plead with the President to forgive him and give him a second chance.
