End Of An Era: UBA’s Former Chairman Ogbue Embarks On Eternal Rest At 99
a revered boardroom statesman and distinguished administrator”
Nigeria’s corporate community is in mourning following the passing of Chief Israel C. Ogbue, former chairman of United Bank for Africa, who died peacefully at the age of 99.
In a statement announcing his passing, the bank expressed deep sorrow, describing him as “a revered boardroom statesman and distinguished administrator” whose life spanned more than six decades of service across Nigeria’s public and private sectors.
Born on February 18, 1927, in Onicha-Olona, Delta State, Ogbue began his professional career in the Federal Civil Service before travelling to the United Kingdom for further studies.
His career later flourished at the National Insurance Corporation of Nigeria, where he rose through senior management ranks and served with distinction until retiring in 1988.
His reputation for discipline and governance expertise subsequently earned him appointments to the boards of several leading institutions, including United Bank for Africa, where he joined as a non-executive director in 2005.

He was later appointed chairman in 2011, providing what the bank described as “steady and principled leadership at a defining period in the bank’s transformation” before retiring in 2013.
According to the statement, his tenure helped reinforce “a culture of strong corporate governance, accountability and long-term sustainability that continues to guide the institution today.”
Beyond the boardroom, Ogbue was known as a devoted family patriarch and mentor. He was the father of Dr. Awele Elumelu and father-in-law to UBA Group Chairman Tony Elumelu.

Those close to him recall a man of humility and deep faith who attributed his longevity to divine grace and consistently encouraged younger generations to pursue ambition with moderation and remain steadfast in adversity.
“UBA Group extends its heartfelt condolences to his children, grandchildren, extended family, friends and associates. We celebrate a remarkable life of service, wisdom and impact, and we honour his invaluable contributions to UBA and to Nigeria’s corporate landscape,” the bank said.
He is survived by his wife, children and grandchildren. Funeral arrangements will be announced by the family in due course.
