Emefiele May Spend Christmas & New Year In Prison

There are indications that former Central Bank Governor Godwin Emefiele may spend the new year and Christmas in Prison.

The immediate past Nigeria’s number one bank failed to meet his bail conditions today-Tuesday, November 28, 2023.

His lead counsel Mathew Burkaa reportedly confirmed the inability to meet bail conditions to journalists according to a report monitored on the thecable.ng;

Emefiele has been returned to Kuje Prison where he is being held.

There are talks he may not get another chance to leave custody until 2024.

Emefiele, facing abuse of office and procurement fraud charges- to the tune of N1.2 billion –  was granted a N300 million bail.

The conditions of the bail stipulate two sureties in like sum and the sureties must possess certificates of occupancy and titles of properties within the Maitama district in Abuja.

He was also ordered to submit all his travel documents to the registrar of the court and remain within the Abuja Municipal Council as part of the conditions.

The former Central Bank Governor is accused of corruptly awarding the contract for the purchase of 43 vehicles valued at N1.2 billion to a staff of the Central Bank of Nigeria – Sa’adatu Yaro between 2018 and 2020. His “not guilty” plea set the stage for prosecution and the unraveling development.
