Edo state state chapter of the Labour Party (LP) says its doors are open to unsettled Deputy Governor of Edo state, Philip Shaibu – but he won’t get any special priviledges.

“If Philip Shaibu is coming to our party he will not be coming as Deputy Governor but as an individual like any other person. The party is open to everyone in Nigeria. The doors are open to anybody who want to come in to contest the election” the Chairman of the Labour Party in Edo State, Kelly Ogbaloi stated on Friday, August 11, 2023.

The party chairman disclosed that the move is to give all members interested in becoming the party candidate for the 2024 Edo gubernatorial election a level playing ground for the most popular and widely accepted flag bearer to emerge.

“We want the Labour Party to win the governorship election come 2024. And to win the election we must have a candidate that will be generally acceptable to the people of Edo State,’ Ogbaloi stated.

This development comes in the face of intense face-off between Governor Godwin Obaseki and Deputy Governor Shaibu.

Obaseki has declared that Shaibu is too desperate to become the next Governor of Edo state and won’t get his support.

Shaibu is said to be hunting for a political platform to achieve his ambition but faces a blockade in the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) championed by estranged mentor, Senator Adams Oshiomhole.

Oshiomhole is the mentor Shaibu turned against to help Obaseki become the Governor of Edo state.
