On October 14, 2019, the first leg of the Lagos Open concluded, as winners emerged in the various categories. The matches between men’s finalists Calvin Hemery and Aldin Setkic as well as the women’s final contest between Laura Pigossi and Sada Nahimana were played at the prestigious Lagos Lawn Tennis Club and was watched by hundreds of sports fans from across the world.

As expected, various lawn tennis stars from across the world have featured in the tournament and we have been blessed by some unforgettable match-ups. This year was, however, extra special as one of the world’s most international beer brands, Heineken threw its weight behind the sporting spectacle, and the brand’s involvement has taken the tournament to new heights.

With the finals of the first leg played out on the 14th of October, we had some well-deserved winners in Burundi’s, Sada Nahimana, and French superstar Calvin Hemery. Both athletes won in the women and men’s singles category respectively and have now etched their names in Lagos Open history.

Congratulating both winners was the Heineken brand manager, Olaoluwa Babalola who spoke of his pride at seeing such a young talented duo emerge victorious in the Heineken sponsored event.

“Both stars gave us a show and they are both deserving winners. They are prime examples of fine athletes who possess all the abilities to become world-beaters. Everyone at Heineken congratulates them and wishes them the best in their sporting careers.”

Heineken is one of the most international brands in the world, and its involvement in the sports scene has seen the brand sponsor some of the biggest sporting spectacles in the world, including the ATP Auckland Open, often referred to as the Heineken Open, the Formula 1, the US Open, the Rugby World Cup and the UEFA Champions League.

Through these sponsorships, the beer brand connects fans of the different sports to the events which they love and helps them express their passion in the best ways. The brand often goes beyond its memorable online campaigns, to also bring a physical feel, often accompanied by an opportunity for fans to enjoy its premium tasting beer.

The second leg of the Lagos Open tournament will run for the rest of the week and will end on the 20th of October.
