It appears that the rights of paying customers are not guaranteed with the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC).

Societynow.ng gathered that this is what is playing out in some areas the electricity distribution company serves in Ogun state.

The information available revealed that in a drastic move to force customers owing to pay their electricity bills, IBEDC has cut off power supplies to some communities in the state.

“This is despite the fact that many of us are on pre-paid meters. We paid for these meters, we have credit on our meters yet we are denied the service we paid for because IBEDC wants to recoup debts from some other persons” societynow.ng learned.

The added information available to societynow.ng revealed the part of Ogun state where this high handedness by IBEDC managers is going as Ilogbo – Ota, in Ado-Odo/ Ota Local Government area of Ogun State.

“The supply of electricity was arbitrarily cut off last week till now, there was no meeting with the communities and no forewarnings. They just came in the guise of maintenance and cut off power supplies to the transformers of the communities concerned” societynow.ng learned.

According to added revelations “It was when residents of the affected communities noticed neighboring places had light that they complained to IBEDC officials.”

Insiders disclosed that IBEDC officials claimed that some residents of the communities are owing accumulated bills and when electricity supply to their residences were cut-off they illegally restored it.

“So rather than deal with these people as stipulated under the law, IBEDC also decided to tow the path of illegality by cutting off electricity supply to all the targetted communities, irrespective of the fact that there are people who are not owing and there are also many on prepaid meters in the communities and darkness does not help in the fight against insecurity ” societynow.ng learned.

Insiders further disclosed that efforts by leaders in the communities to make IBEDC officials in charge of the arrears restore electricity supply and deal with customers based on their credit rating as remain deadlocked with IBEDC officials insisting all residents in the areas must bear the pains of lack of electricity supply until an appreciable part of outstanding debts are paid.

“The point is IBEDC has shown meeting your part of the financial and social obligations to it does not guarantee enjoying their services in Ilogbo nor protect your rights under the constitution as regards its operations” societynow.ng learned.
