Defeat Or Not, You Made Us Proud – Abdul Samad Rabiu Gifts Super Eagles $500,000
insisting that Nigeria’s players deserve to be rewarded for courage, commitment
Abdul Samad Rabiu, founder of BUA Group, has gone ahead to fulfill his $500,000 pledge to the Super Eagles, insisting that Nigeria’s players deserve to be rewarded for courage, commitment and national pride, regardless of the final outcome of their Africa Cup of Nations campaign.
In a statement issued on January 14, 2026, the businessman and philanthropist praised the team for fighting with heart and determination, noting that although the result did not go Nigeria’s way in the decisive match, the Super Eagles gave their all and made the country proud.
“You fought with your hearts, gave your all, and showed true courage and determination on the pitch,” the master of different spheres of enterprise said, adding that the players’ passion and unity were worthy of celebration.
The payout follows an earlier incentive package announced during the tournament after Nigeria’s 2–0 quarter-final victory over Algeria, a match the BUA Group Chairman said “lifted the spirit of the nation” and had Nigerians “proudly cheering the team on” ahead of the semi-finals.
At the time, he pledged $500,000 should the Super Eagles win the semi-final, with an additional $50,000 promised for every goal scored. He also committed to a bigger reward if Nigeria went all the way, promising $1 million alongside a $100,000 bonus for each goal scored in the final.
While the ultimate prize eluded the team, the champion of commerce said his decision to still release the $500,000 was a recognition of effort, sacrifice and the joy the players brought to millions of Nigerians throughout the competition.
“Sometimes, even our best efforts don’t bring the outcome we hope for, but the spirit, passion, and unity you displayed are what truly matter,” he said, stressing that Nigeria would always be proud of the team.
He urged the Super Eagles to keep their heads high, expressing confidence that the experience and lessons from the campaign would fuel greater success in future tournaments.
The gesture has reinforced the belief that strong private sector backing can boost morale and sustain confidence around national teams, especially at critical moments. For Rabiu, such motivation reflects a broader philosophy that blends enterprise with encouragement.
As founder of ASR Africa, regarded as the largest charity initiative by a private individual on the continent, the business leader has built a reputation for reward-driven philanthropy spanning education, health, social development and humanitarian causes.
In December 2025, he further underlined this approach when he announced a ₦30 billion cash gift to long-serving BUA Group staff, describing it as recognition of excellence, dedication and unwavering brand loyalty.
Through consistent gestures that reward effort as much as outcomes, Rabiu has continued to project a message that excellence—whether on the pitch or in the workplace—deserves to be acknowledged, even when victory proves elusive.
