Zenith Bank on Friday celebrated its 35th anniversary at the Eko Convention Centre, Eko Hotels & Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos, with Dame Adaora Umeoji, the Group Managing Director (GMD) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO), unveiling figures that she said tell the story of the bank’s resilience, vision, and staying power.
Addressing high-profile guests made up of political leaders, regulators, captains of industry, shareholders, customers, and staff, Umeoji said the bank’s journey from a converted residential building in 1990 to a globally recognised financial institution was anchored on the foresight and discipline of its founder and chairman, Jim Ovia.
“Dr Ovia built Zenith Bank on three pillars—people, technology, and service—which have guided every innovation and decision in the last 35 years,” she said.

The Group Managing Director described Ovia as a visionary whose early embrace of technology, including pioneering VSAT connectivity for branches and electronic banking, set the bank apart. His ability to nurture talent, she noted, has produced a strong succession pipeline with five CEOs—herself being the first female in the role—all emerging from within the institution.
Reeling out what she called “remarkable numbers”, Umeoji said Zenith Bank remains Nigeria’s most profitable financial institution, with tier-1 capital leading the industry for 16 consecutive years.

The CEO put shareholders’ funds at N4.44 trillion, market capitalisation at N3.04 trillion, and assets at about $20 billion with a tier-1 capital of $2 billion. And, added that the bank had already surpassed the Central Bank of Nigeria’s recapitalisation requirement with a 160 percent subscription.

CEO Umeoji also listed a physical footprint of 447 branches and cash centres across Nigeria, supported by 2,100 ATMs and a refreshed world-class IT infrastructure. Beyond Nigeria, the bank has expanded into Ghana, Sierra Leone, The Gambia, the UK, UAE, France, and a representative office in China. It is also listed on both the Nigerian Exchange Group and the London Stock Exchange.
Dame Umeoji highlighted the bank’s global recognition, citing the Euromoney Best Bank in Nigeria 2025 and Global Finance Best Bank in Nigeria 2025 awards among its long list of international honours. She stressed Zenith’s role in driving economic development through financing infrastructure projects, promoting financial inclusion with products like ZECA, ASPIRE, and Timeless Account, and empowering women via Z-Woman, alongside its long-standing sponsorship of the national women’s basketball league.

She said the bank’s social impact is evident in road construction, school building, ICT centres, market reconstructions, and security funding across states, while its sustainability commitments are reflected in solar-powered branches and energy-efficient facilities. The pace-setting bank boss added that Zenith is one of Nigeria’s biggest taxpayers and employers, with 20,000 staff in the country and 2,000 more across subsidiaries.
Paying tribute to Ovia’s broader legacy, she described him as a philanthropist whose foundation has provided scholarships, built schools, and supported ICT education nationwide.

She noted that President Bola Tinubu appointed him chairman of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund in 2023 to strengthen student access to financing.

The evening also featured tributes to Ovia’s wife, Kay, whom Umeoji called “a pillar of encouragement and strength”, as well as gratitude to regulators, shareholders, customers, board members, and the bank’s “unicorn workforce” for their role in sustaining the brand. “Zenith is and will always be in your best interest,” Umeoji told the audience, promising that the bank would keep pushing boundaries and setting standards.

The celebration, attended by Vice President Kashim Shettima, ministers, governors, diplomats, and industry leaders, closed on a note of festivity with performances and surprises to mark what Umeoji called “an evening that lives up to its name—At the Zenith.”
