The Benin Traditional Council (BTC) has reiterated that the ban on burial in the seven local government areas covering Benin region still subsists till January, 2017.

This clarification was contained in a statement released by the BTC and signed by its Secretary, Frank Irabor.

BTC said it has not lifted the ban on funeral activities following the coronation of Oba Ewuare II on October 20.
The statement reads, “The attention of the Benin Traditional Council has been drawn to an unauthorised press release issued by the Coronation planning Committee as it relates to burial ceremonies within the period of the coronation activities.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the Benin Traditional Council hereby use this medium to inform the general public that the post coronation ceremonies of His Royal Majesty, Omo N’ Oba N’ Edo, Uku Akpolokpolo, Oba Ewuare 11, Oba of Benin, is still on-going till December ending (31st December, 2016) with Ekasa Dance, except the Oba directs it should end earlier.

“Consequently, prohibition of funeral activities is still in place, during the period of Ekasa performance. This information supersedes the earlier press statement made by the coronation planning committee.

“The general public should please take note and comply strictly with the prohibition order.”
