Nigeria’s business community is reflecting on the passing of a revered financial services leader and elder statesman, following an emotional public tribute by leading investor and philanthropist Tony Elumelu to his father-in-law, Chief Israel C. Ogbue, who died peacefully on February 18, 2026 — his 99th birthday.

In a deeply personal statement, Elumelu described the late patriarch as “one of those people” who quietly become foundational to the lives they touch.

“There are people who walk into your life and quietly become part of its foundation,” he stated, adding “My father-in-law… was one of those people for me, and his passing leaves a space that cannot be filled.”

Beyond family ties, the tribute underscores Chief Ogbue’s central role in shaping one of Africa’s most significant banking transformations.

Elumelu recalled that in January 2005 he led the historic merger between Standard Trust Bank and United Bank for Africa, a move widely regarded as a defining moment in modern African banking.

“As GMD/CEO of the newly combined institution, I carried the weight of a singular mandate — to transform a single-country bank into a pan-African powerhouse… The journey demanded the right people.” he disclosed.

That same year, Chief Ogbue joined the bank’s board as a Non-Executive Director, bringing decades of leadership experience across insurance and merchant banking, along with what Elumelu described as “a reputation for integrity that preceded him.”

His influence, the tribute notes, was quickly felt within the institution and beyond. “His peers recognised quickly what those of us close to him had long felt — that he possessed something rare; a combination of wisdom, steadiness, and principle that made everyone around him want to be better,” Elumelu wrote.

In 2011, the board appointed him chairman, a role he held until 2013. During that period, Elumelu said, Chief Ogbue strengthened governance structures and embedded values that continue to shape the bank’s culture.

“He reinforced UBA’s governance,” Elumelu divulged,  giving more insight with “The culture of accountability and long-term thinking he reinforced continues to live inside the Group today.”

Yet the tribute makes clear that professional accomplishments alone do not capture the depth of the man being remembered.

The philanthropist described Chief Ogbue as “a man of deep and unshakeable faith,” a devoted Christian, husband, father, and patriarch whose greatest pride was his family.

“It is with a grief that words struggle to hold,” he said, announcing the passing alongside his wife, Dr. Awele Elumelu.

“Chief passed peacefully… on his 99th birthday,” Elumelu who is the current Chairman of UBA announced solemnly.

Reflecting on the significance of such longevity, Elumelu labeled the late elder’s life as a monument defined not by structures, but by impact.

“A life that long, and that beautifully lived, is its own kind of monument,” he penned, declaring “the kind that doesn’t crumble.”

He closed with a farewell both intimate and enduring: “Rest well, Chief O, as I fondly called him. We will miss you dearly.”

As tributes continue to emerge from across Nigeria’s financial and corporate landscape, the portrait that has taken shape is of a man whose influence spanned boardrooms and generations — and whose legacy, in the words of the tribute that announced his passing, “won’t fade.”
