In making the announcement, Akpabio posted on his social media page

“I presided over today’s Plenary after Sallah break. At the resumed sitting of the Senate, Principal Officers were elected for the Senate with Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, emerging the Leader of the Senate, Senator Dave Umahi; Deputy Senate Leader, Senator Ali Ndume; Senate Majority Whip and Senator Lola Ashiru; Deputy Majority Whip, while the oppostion parties elected Senators Simon Davon Mwadkwon, Oyewumi Olalere, Darlington Nwokocha and Rufai Hanga, as Minority Leader, Deputy Minority Leader, Minority Whip and Deputy Minority Whip, respectively.”
