Candidates backed by Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun and the dominant structure of the All Progressives Congress (APC) swept through Saturday’s House of Representatives primaries across the state, as the ruling party held direct elections in all 20 local government areas.

The exercise, which witnessed large turnout, orderly voting, further underscored Governor Abiodun’s firm control of the APC structure in Ogun State, a dominance that continues to sideline other competing forces within the party and shape major political outcomes.

Across several federal constituencies, aspirants aligned with the governor’s political machinery emerged victorious as party leaders and stakeholders consolidated his influence ahead of future primaries.

In Sagamu Local Government, Funmi Afuwape clinched the APC ticket for Remo Federal Constituency, with party officials describing the process as peaceful and transparent.

“The exercise was peaceful and well-organised. Hon. Funmi Afuwape won clearly,” AMORAN chairman, Taofeek Sokoya, said.

In Yewa North/Imeko-Afon Federal Constituency, Gboyega Nasir Isiaka, earlier endorsed by party leaders, was affirmed through unanimous voice vote, while in Yewa South/Ipokia, Dr. Oluwatoyin Taiwo emerged overwhelmingly after Governor Abiodun’s camp maintained its grip on the process.

APC governorship consensus candidate, Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, who voted in Yewa South, said the party had demonstrated internal democracy.

“We overwhelmingly elected Dr. Oluwatoyin Taiwo. APC is setting the pace for peaceful internal democracy,” Adeola said.

In Ifo/Ewekoro Federal Constituency, Adijat Motunrayo Adeleye also secured victory, while other wards across Abeokuta, Odeda, Ijebu North and Obafemi-Owode recorded smooth exercises.

Governor Abiodun commended party members, electoral officials, security agencies and stakeholders for what he described as a successful process, saying the primaries marked the start of a broader electoral process for the party.

“The successful conduct of the House of Representatives primary election marks the beginning of a series of important party exercises,” he said.

Political observers say the outcome again highlights Abiodun’s entrenched hold on Ogun APC, with his loyalists dominating the party’s internal framework and determining the emergence of key candidates, leaving little room for opposition tendencies within the ruling party.
