Governor Dapo Abiodun and Senator-Elect for Ogun East, Gbenga Daniel meet for the first in public amid the raging dispute over the 2023 Ogun state gubernatorial election.

They were both guests at the funeral service of late Professor Theophilus Oladipo Ogunelse in Shagamu, Ogun State.

Ogunlese died on January 19, 2023, at the age of 99.

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Betsy the wife of Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki, Governor Dapo Abiodun, and former Governor Gbenga Daniel were part of high profile guests at the event.

Though members of the same political party – All Progressives Congress (APC), Daniel and Abiodun were on opposing sides in the March 18, 2023, Ogun state gubernatorial election.

Daniel switched support to Ladi Adebutu of the rival People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the election, resulting in a near loss for Abiodun.

Abiodun was declared the winner of the election by a margin of 13,915 votes. The Governor polled 276, 298 votes against Adebutu’s 262, 383 votes.

Daniel, a former two-term governor of Ogun state faced massive backlash from Abiodun’s men over the near loss, with allegations of betrayal and abuse heaped on him.

Adebutu is disputing the result – and has taken legal action – on the premise that there were orchestrated irregularities that forced the cancellation of results in areas where he is popular in Ishagamu.

He claimed to be leading by about 33,000 votes before the cancelation of votes.
