Senator Or King – Why There Are Fresh Talks About Abiodun’s After Office Ambition
governor, who is in his second term in office, has until 2027 to complete
The speculations are raging.
The Alaperu of Iperu, the highly respected Oba Adeleke Idowu-Basibo, has been laid to rest. And the ruling house of Governor Dapo Abiodun is in line to produce the next king of the town.
The governor, who is in his second term in office, has until 2027 to complete it.
But in September 2022, while seeking a second term, Abiodun told a collegiate of traditional rulers at a meeting in Joga Orile, Yewa North Local Government Area of Ogun State:
“You know that I’m also a prince. Maybe after I leave office, I will go and sit down and think of how to go and carry a crown somewhere so that I will be crowned an Oba in my retirement.”

The governor made the statement at an occasion where 47 traditional rulers, operating under the emblem “Trusted Royals,” endorsed him for a second term.
This episode has been dredged up and has become the subject of intense speculation as the process to determine the next king of the governor’s hometown kicks off—especially with his royal family in line to produce a candidate.
Fueling the talks are discussions about how Abiodun, who was not one of the main aspirants, joined the Ogun State 2019 gubernatorial race at the 11th hour and defied all expectations to become governor.
However, before this latest twist, prevailing claims suggested that Abiodun was eyeing a takeover of the Ogun East Senatorial seat after leaving office.
The senatorial position is currently occupied by fellow All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain and former two-term governor of Ogun State, Gbenga Daniel.
