Attempts to extradite former governor Diepreye Alamieyeseigha to the United Kingdom for money laundering offence is on.

According to British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Andrew Pocock in a statement sourced from punch ‘The former governor skipped bail in the UK on a charge of money laundering and returned to Nigeria. So, he has an outstanding charge in the UK, which is there for him to answer.’

And respected personality, Prof. Itse Sagay, The Chairman, Presidential Advisory Committee on Corruption in another statement sourced from punch says the United Kingdom has every legal right to demand for the extradition of the former governor.

Alamieyeseigha is currently enjoying state pardon by former President Goodluck Jonathan for offences committed while in office. Ex Gov DSP Alamieyeseigha But according to those pushing for his extradition ‘Alamieyeseigha allegedly committed a separate crime by laundering money in Britain and that is not a crime in Nigeria but a crime against British Criminal Law and so, Goodluck Jonathan cannot pardon him for that.”

Nigeria and Britain have a pact which requires to extradite offenders being sought.

And the British High Commissioner expresses his country’s keen interest in Alamieyeseigha by expressly stating ‘“We have already discussed it and the Nigerian government knows our views. But we would like to see him return and answer the charge in the UK.”

Information pieced together by societynowng.com revealed that a growing number of people share the sentiments of Professor Sagay.

This is based on conviction that getting the former governor abroad to answer for his alleged crimes would shore up the image and reputation of the country in the face of ongoing fight against corruption – and plea to foreign countries to help out.

Britain’s commitment to help Nigeria apprehend corrupt officials in recent years has not been doubt.

A former powerful petroleum minister, Diezani Alison Madueke was recently arrested in london and though was granted bail, faces charges of money laundering and bribery.

A former governor James Ibori is currently serving out jail sentence in a London prison for offences trampled over back home.

However just like there are those pushing for his extradition, there are some attempting to defend the ex governor.

Ex presidential spokes person Doyin Okupe in yet another statement gleaned from punch claimed there was no need for Nigeria to send Alamieyeseigha to the UK since he had been punished and pardoned by the President.

Okupe, a member of the People’s Democratic Party like the embattled ex governor reportedly argued that the offence was committed against the people of Nigeria and the UK had no business with Alamieyeseigha.

However clinical observation for prof Sagay that ‘“Alamieyeseigha allegedly committed a separate crime by laundering money in Britain and that is not a crime in Nigeria but a crime against British Criminal Law and so, Goodluck Jonathan cannot pardon him for that.” appears to pull the rug off Okupe and his co travellers campaign and given added wind to movement to extradite the former Bayelsa state helms to London for money laundering.
