General Manager and Business Development Group Head at BUA Group, one of Nigeria’s leading manufacturing conglomerates, Mr. Tajudeen Ahmed, and six of his former course-mates have emerged as inaugural Executive Committee members of Class of 1999 Accounting Alumni of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria.

Ahmed, who was two years ago the AGM/Group Head, Strategic Planning & Project Management at Skye Bank Plc, emerged President at the keenly contested election which held at the Class’ maiden “Global Reunion” at NAF Conference and Events Centre in Abuja at the weekend. Subsequently, he has advocated for increased alumni involvement in the growth and development of their alma mater, the Universities.

In his acceptance speech, the BUA Group strategist said: “It is when graduates show interest in the affairs of, and contribute meaningfully to, their Alma Mater that such institutions will experience sustainable growth and development”.

“Dear colleagues I urge everyone to contribute to the growth and development of our department in particular, and by extension, our renowned Ahmadu Bello University Zaria; the University with the largest student population in Nigeria, which had produced so many accomplished Nigerians who have contributed – and are still contributing – to the progress of diverse sectors of Nigerian society”, he added.

He also pledged to ensure that members were fully engaged in the programs and activities of the Class, and that “everyone will be treated fairly and equally”.

Other members of the newly-elected EXCO with a two-year renewable mandate, include: Cynthia Udodirim Garuba, Vice President (Business Manager, Accounts, Heritage Academy School); James Adefiranye, General Secretary (Lecturer, Department of Accounting, University of Abuja); Funlola Iyoha, Financial Secretary (Senior Consultant/Office Manager, The Boston Consulting Group- BCG); John Bello, Public Relations Officer (Managing Director/CEO, Micron Travels & Tours Limited); Serah Bulus, Treasurer (Lecturer, Department of Accountancy, Kaduna Polytechnic); and Shiru Lawal, Welfare Officer (Administrator/Chairman, Lokoja Local Government Area, Kogi State).

The Class’ maiden “Global Reunion” was indeed, a spectacle to behold; as it was a colourful ceremony with activities which involved speeches, music and dance, cutting of a cake, general stock-taking and ultimately elections of Executive Committee (EXCO) members.

Majority of the alumni have not met since they graduated eighteen years ago, after having spent six years on campus due to incessant lecturers’ strike actions, in pursuit of a four-year degree; and as expected, there were emotional scenes of back-slapping, hugging, thumping and clenching of fists as the unique set of old students relived their experiences at the Kongo Mini Campus of the University, where their department was – and still is located.

As the day wore on, members unanimously endorsed Lagos as the location of the next Reunion scheduled for 2018, with a vow by members resident in the nation’s commercial nerve-center to surpass Abuja – in terms of organization, execution, glamour, and impact.

The Reunion was well-attended my members resident all over Nigeria and in the Diaspora.
