The Nigerian Army has dismissed reports suggesting that soldiers are threatening mutiny over salaries and allowances, describing the claims as false, misleading and deliberately sensational, with the potential to undermine public confidence and national security.

In a firm statement issued on Monday, the Army said there has been no threat of mutiny within its ranks, stressing that such conduct is alien to its ethos, discipline and professionalism.

The noted that mutiny remains a grave offence under military law and incompatible with the values of officers and soldiers who are trained to remain loyal to the Constitution and the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces.

The Army faulted the reliance on anonymous and unverifiable claims circulated through non-official channels, insisting that such narratives do not reflect the disposition or conduct of its personnel.

According to the statement, officers and soldiers are guided by established internal procedures for addressing grievances rather than resorting to public platforms.

Clarifying issues around remuneration, the Army explained that promotion increments represent only one component of military pay and should not be misconstrued as total earnings.

It said military remuneration consists of consolidated salaries, rank-based allowances, operational allowances, as well as field and hardship allowances, with entitlements varying based on deployment, qualifications and responsibilities.

The Army added that, in collaboration with the Armed Forces of Nigeria and relevant government authorities, it continues to implement structured welfare reforms aimed at improving the wellbeing of troops and their families.

These measures, it said, include periodic salary reviews, enhanced operational allowances, improved accommodation, medical care and insurance packages, with issues relating to allowances undergoing continuous review within approved government frameworks.

It also disclosed that the Chief of Army Staff has, since assuming duty, initiated positive engagements with the appropriate authorities on troop welfare, engagements the Army said are already yielding progressive outcomes.

Rejecting claims of neglect, the Army maintained that the Federal Government under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has consistently demonstrated commitment to the welfare and operational effectiveness of the Armed Forces, particularly in the face of evolving security challenges across the country.

Reaffirming its cohesion and professionalism, the Army said it remains fully focused on its constitutional mandate of defending Nigeria’s sovereignty and supporting internal security operations. It warned that attempts to portray the institution as unstable or lawless are irresponsible and detrimental to national security.

The Army urged members of the public to disregard unfounded reports and rely solely on official communication channels for accurate information on the Armed Forces, especially the Nigerian Army.
