Recent checks by societynow revealed that the animosity against former Ondo Governor and leader of the state chapter of the People’s Democratic Party – Olusegun Mimiko by his party men remains intense.

Mimiko is accused of abandoning the party at a very critical moment for “self-interest”.

The anger against Mimiko stems from his alleged role in the PDP’s loss of the state to rival party All Progressives Congress, the party of incumbent governor Rotimi Akeredolu.

The former governor popularly known as Iroko is accused of negotiating “immunity” after office for the ruling All Progressives Congress to take over Ondo state.

The APC had taken over the Federal Government and a large chunk of the states in a widespread electoral victory before the November 26 Ondo gubernatorial election.

Mimiko had opted to field his attorney general Eyitayo Jegede as his party candidate and successor.

But acting out a script which later pitched him against his party men, he allegedly refused to release campaign funds to prosecute the election – after many of his loyalists and supporters had personally expended limited resources to prepare the ground for “a fund aided victory”.

Left high and dry by their leaders, the PDP members watched in shock as the APC machinery capitalized on their lapse and claim victory.

Mimiko reportedly made things worse by refusal to “explain” his action or “refund” the loss suffered by those who staked personal “resources” for the party.

“The sentiments the development wiped up transformed Mimiko into a greatly unpopular personae within and outside his party” a source disclosed.

Checks revealed rather than abate, the animosity against him appears to be becoming intense as those out for him work selves up on how to pay him back in his own coin.

He faces angst from his party men and their sympathizers on the street.

“And as another general election beckons, those sentiments against the former governor are vibrating and thundering all over the state more than before” an insider stated.

The situation is said to have become such that serious politicians contesting the coming general elections are taking extra care not to “really identify” with the man known as Iroko.
