Sources in South Africa confirmed that about 280 locals have been arrested over the raging issue of Xenophobia (fear of foreigners or strangers).

Locals have consistently subjected nationals of other countries, especially Nigerians to sporadic attacks until things came to a head this week.

Following another scathing attack which resulted in the heavy loss of lives and properties, the businesses of South Africans in the countries of the victims – including in Nigeria – were attacked.

The self-help approach initiated by the angry citizens of the countries of victims – and sanctions instituted by their governments – has forced the hand of the South African Government.

‘’They have started arresting the culprits of the hate crimes here and reporting it in the media ‘’ a source in South Africa stated.

‘’About 280 people have been arrested, more could have been bagged if they (police and government) reacted earlier’’ the source added.

Societynow.ng learned that the arrest is seen as the fallout of the counter-reaction by the citizens and countries of the victims of crimes rooted in Xenophobia in South Africa.
