Why Amosun’s Influence Is Growing Fast With Tinubu
quietly but rapidly on the rise within the Presidency
The influence of former Ogun State Governor, Ibikunle Amosun, is quietly but rapidly on the rise within the Presidency.
Sources trace this to sensitive back-channel roles he is playing for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ahead of the 2027 election.
Tinubu, who is driving sweeping economic reforms, is seeking a second term and leaning on trusted allies to secure nationwide backing.

Insiders say Amosun is deploying his extensive northern connections to bolster Tinubu’s prospects.
A former Senator representing Ogun Central, Amosun was one of the most powerful figures during the administration of late President Muhammadu Buhari, enjoying unrestricted access that cemented his ties with northern political blocs and secured his place in the Buhari political family.
“Amosun is now putting this reach into play to secure favorable understandings in the North for Tinubu’s re-election,” a source disclosed.

Until his death in London on July 13, 2025, Buhari retained a loyal grassroots following in the North and openly backed Tinubu. With his passing, consolidating that support base has become critical — and this task has elevated Amosun’s role in the President’s inner circle.
Observers highlight other three factors working in his favor: his dominance of one of the most influential political structures in Ogun State, a state dear to Tinubu; his decision to step down during the 2023 APC primaries and rally support for Tinubu’s candidacy; and his reputation as a man of conviction — once he takes a stand, he holds it, no matter whose ox is gored.
