On Monday, July 5 2021, the MTN Foundation and Musical Society of Nigeria (MUSON) hosted music lovers to a classical concert titled An Evening with the Maestros at the MUSON Centre, Onikan, Lagos.

The event was to celebrate the success and achievements of the MTN MUSON scholars, class 2021. Since 2006, MTN Foundation has supported the MUSON School of Music through a dedicated scholarship scheme which has recorded over 300 scholars till date.

Guests were treated to spectacular renditions of  iconic cultural and classical pieces.

Here are three unforgettable moments from the concert, number two was the highlight for us.

  1. Classical versions of African songs:

The sprinkling of african songs to the concert made the evening memorable. Indigenous self-composed pieces such as  Ife Olorun Oba by Oloniyo Samuel Olaitan and Egwu Onwa by Udemadu Kasiemobi who are both MTN-MUSON scholars contributed to making the evening enjoyable. This just goes to show that the MTN-MUSON scholars were not just trained to read and perform songs by great music legends but to create theirs!

  1. The rendition of Whitney Huston’s ‘I Look To You’

These graduates took us to church as they performed a popular pop-soul hit, “I Look to You” by American recording artist Whitney Houston. To describe  the performance as soulful isn’t enough.

  1. A sprinkle of dance and drama

Their rendition of Egwu Onwa by Udemadu Kasiemobi did not only take us back to the ancient Igbo culture but did so with some drama. Udemadu and his colleagues dazzled us with mind-blowing costumes and dance performances.
