The official story is that one of the bosses at Sahara Energy, Tope Shonubi is on the entourage of President Buhari as a part of a 3days working Visit to the United States of America.

The high point of the official trip is a scheduled meeting with President Donald Trump.

The story behind the official version is that the inclusion of Shonubi, Aliko Dangote and other top-level players in the nation’s economy tells the story of a subtle endorsement of President Buhari by the business community – home and abroad.

The widespread talk is that the Buhari administration is deeply hurting the business community with it’s policy and players are looking forward to a “better alternative” as the President seeks re election.

The release of Shonubi’s picture kneeling down while greeting the President is the story of bringing to public space hidden switch of allegiance from former President Goodluck Jonathan to incumbent President Buhari.

“It’s all business, I guess he needed to align with the new power to protect his business interests” a source pointed out

Shonubi and his Sahara Energy are well-known promoters of the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan via profitable business ventures with embattled former petroleum minister Diezani Madueke.

Shonubi’s Sahara Energy is widely reported as one of the chief beneficiaries of that particular era but the promoters were obviously visionary enough to invest in the new government before it came into office.

And have obviously been benefiting from that long-range move.

“He didn’t just wake up start kneeling to greet the president, it is something he has become accustomed to based on a certain degree of familiarity” a source pointed out.

Shonubi runs Sahara Energy with Tonye Cole and Ade Odunsi.

Part of a report featured on thecapital.ng provides insight into his background

“Starting out life as a taxi driver in London, Sonubi soon met a top shot of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, Alhaji Haruna Abubakar, who would make Tope his choice driver whenever business or pleasure brought him to the Queen’s Land.

‘’A brilliant young man with a clinical business vision and uncomplicated moral background, he soon became an intellectual sparring partner of Abubakar who would later invite him back home. From that point on, his life became more meaningful. He was introduced into the oil business and started selling to a number of companies including Wale Tinubu’s OANDO.

Business was good and before long, Tope became a looming fixture among the jet set and bourgeoisie, the powerful and popular. Then, in 1996, alongside Tonye and Ade, they started Sahara Group which incubates companies like the Sahara Energy Field, Sahara Gas, Sahara Farms, and Sahara Trade and Sahara Bulk Storage Facilities among others, all of which have their core fields of endeavour centered within the oil and gas industry and its associated sub-sectors.

However, Tope Sonubi, Ade Odunsi and Tonye Cole were some of the few oil magnates who benefited immensely from former petroleum minister, Diezani Alison-Madueke sleazy administration, no doubt”
