President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed profound sorrow over the death of His Holiness Pope Francis, describing the late Pontiff as “a humble servant of God, a tireless champion of the poor, and a guiding light for millions.”
In a statement issued from the State House in Abuja, the Nigerian leader joined the global Catholic community and Christians worldwide in mourning the revered head of the Catholic Church, who passed away just a day after his appearance for the traditional Easter Sunday blessing.
President Tinubu paid glowing tribute to Pope Francis’s unwavering commitment to social justice, environmental stewardship, and interfaith harmony. “He challenged the powerful to act with justice, called nations to welcome the stranger, and reminded us that our common home—this Earth—is a gift we must protect for future generations,” the President said.
The Nigerian leader praised the Pope’s legacy of compassion and inclusiveness, noting his powerful advocacy for the marginalised and his deep concern for the developing world. “He was a steadfast advocate for the developing world, where he consistently spoke against economic injustice and ceaselessly prayed for peace and stability in troubled regions,” Tinubu remarked.
Reflecting on the Pope’s recent health battle, President Tinubu recalled expressing hope for the Pontiff’s recovery in his 2025 Easter message. “I was happy to watch his appearance to deliver the traditional Easter Sunday blessing in St. Peter’s Basilica. Alas, the Lord called him home a day after,” he said.
President Tinubu urged the global community to honour Pope Francis not merely with words but through continued action in defense of human dignity and care for the vulnerable. “Let us honour him not with words alone but with action: by lifting those who are down, healing our communities, and defending the dignity of every person,” he said.
On behalf of the government and people of Nigeria, President Tinubu extended heartfelt condolences to the Vatican, the global Catholic Church, and Christians worldwide, praying for the late Pope’s peaceful repose: “May God Almighty grant His beloved servant eternal rest.”
