passed away in London on Sunday, July 13, 202
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away in London on Sunday, July 13, 2025, at about 4:30 pm after a prolonged illness.
In a solemn statement released by the State House, President Tinubu expressed deep sorrow over the passing of his predecessor and has since spoken with Mrs Aishat Buhari, the late President’s widow, to extend his heartfelt condolences.
As part of arrangements to honour the former leader, President Tinubu has directed Vice President Kashim Shettima to travel to the United Kingdom to accompany Buhari’s body back to Nigeria for burial.
The late Muhammadu Buhari, a two-term civilian President elected in 2015 and re-elected in 2019, previously served as Nigeria’s military Head of State from January 1984 to August 1985. His leadership spanned over four decades in both military and democratic roles.
In honour of the departed leader, President Tinubu has also ordered all national flags to fly at half-mast as a mark of respect.
