Supreme Court Judgment: Fubara Tells Way Forward
even as he expressed disagreement with the rulings
Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has assured the people of the state that his administration will implement the recent Supreme Court judgments without reservations, even as he expressed disagreement with the rulings.
In a state broadcast, Fubara acknowledged the apex court’s verdict on the lingering political disputes in Rivers State but maintained that his government remains committed to upholding the rule of law and constitutional governance.
“Although we disagree with the judgments, we are bound to obey the orders made therein as a law-abiding government,” he stated.
The governor revealed that his legal team expects to receive the certified true copy of the judgments by Friday, March 7, 2025, after which his administration will study their ramifications and take appropriate steps to move the state forward.
In a key directive, Fubara ordered the immediate takeover of all 23 local government councils by Heads of Personnel Management (HPMs), pending the conduct of fresh elections by the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission. This decision follows the Supreme Court’s position against caretaker arrangements in local government administration.
He further instructed outgoing local government chairmen to formally hand over power to the designated HPMs by Monday, March 3, 2025, ensuring a smooth transition at the grassroots level.
Acknowledging the tense political atmosphere, the governor called on residents to remain calm and continue their daily activities without fear. “Although our dear state seems to be back in trying times, I urge everyone to remain peaceful as we continue to fulfill our responsibilities to the citizens,” he reassured.
With this address, Fubara has set the stage for the next phase of governance in Rivers State, signaling his readiness to navigate the political landscape within the bounds of legality.
