President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in his 2024 Christmas address to the nation, called on Nigerians to embrace love, unity, and compassion as the guiding principles of the season.
Speaking from Lagos, the President reflected on the birth of Jesus Christ and its enduring message of hope and resilience in challenging times.
In his speech, President Tinubu described Christmas as a celebration of divine prophecy fulfilled, symbolizing the triumph of light over darkness. “Christmas reminds us that light can emerge even in the darkest times, bringing solace and hope,” he said. He emphasized that this universal message resonates with Nigerians of all faiths, reinforcing the nation’s shared values of peace and unity.
The President expressed deep sorrow over recent tragic events in Ibadan, Okija, and Abuja, which have brought pain and loss to many families. “Our hearts are with those who continue to suffer from these heartbreaking incidents,” he stated. Tinubu urged Nigerians to pray for healing and an end to such tragedies, emphasizing the importance of community solidarity in difficult times.
Acknowledging the challenges many Nigerians faced this year, including floods, fires, and accidents, the President offered his condolences to affected families. “May we all find comfort in our faith, the support of loved ones, and the abiding presence of Jesus Christ,” he said, reaffirming the government’s commitment to supporting vulnerable citizens and fostering a culture of care.
The President also called for compassion towards those facing hardship, urging citizens to extend kindness in their daily interactions. “Kindness transcends financial status. A smile or a word of encouragement can mean the world to someone in need,” he remarked.
Tinubu paid tribute to the nation’s armed forces, who risk their lives to protect Nigeria’s sovereignty. He urged Nigerians to remember them in their prayers and extend unwavering support to their families. He also requested similar prayers for the country’s leaders, stating that collective support would empower the government to diligently serve the nation and accelerate its development.
Highlighting Nigeria’s journey toward restoration and progress, the President described the country’s future as bright and promising. “In the spirit of this season, let us renew our hope and belief in a prosperous Nigeria,” he declared, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to building a united and prosperous nation.
As millions of Nigerians prepare for festive travel, President Tinubu reassured citizens of the government’s efforts to ensure safe and convenient journeys. He announced free train services and subsidized road transport costs across 144 routes nationwide to ease travel burdens during the holiday season.
Concluding his address, the President extended warm wishes for a joyous Christmas and a prosperous New Year. “Let us continue to walk the path of hope, unity, and love as one people. Together, we will build the Nigeria of our dreams,” he affirmed.
Nigerians across the country have hailed the President’s message as a timely reminder of the values of compassion and resilience, which have long been the nation’s hallmark. As the festivities unfold, the spirit of unity and hope remains a beacon for the country’s shared aspirations.
