President Bola Tinubu has expressed sadness over the death of elder statesman and Afenifere leader, Pa Reuben Famuyide Fasoranti, who died at the age of 100.

Tinubu described the late Yoruba leader as an icon of integrity and a leading figure in the progressive political tradition of the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo.

The President, in a condolence message issued by the State House on Tuesday, said Fasoranti’s death was a significant loss to his family, the Yoruba people and Nigeria.

“I received with profound sadness the news of the passing of Pa Reuben Famuyide Fasoranti, our father, patriarch, elder statesman, and foremost Afenifere leader, who died at the glorious age of 100,” he said.

Tinubu extended condolences to the Fasoranti family, the people of Akure Kingdom, the Ondo State Government and residents, South-West Nigeria and the entire Afenifere family.

He described the deceased as “one of the last great titans of Chief Obafemi Awolowo’s progressive family,” adding that his century-long life exemplified integrity, discipline, selflessness and commitment to the Yoruba people and Nigeria’s unity and progress.

The President recalled Fasoranti’s contributions to education, public service and politics, noting that he served as an educationist and school principal before becoming Commissioner for Finance in the old Ondo State.

He also praised his leadership of Afenifere and his commitment to true federalism and social justice.

“Baba made immense contributions to this country and, at the risk of his life, fought for the democracy we enjoy today,” Tinubu said.

According to the President, Nigeria would miss Fasoranti’s wisdom, moral authority and fatherly counsel, particularly at a time when his guidance was needed.

Tinubu recalled celebrating the elder statesman’s 100th birthday on May 11, 2026, describing the milestone as a celebration of his enduring legacy.

He also remembered visiting Fasoranti at his Akure residence in 2022 to inform him of his decision to contest the presidency.

“I recall his prayers and counsel when I came to his residence in Akure in 2022 to inform him of my decision to contest the presidency. Pa Fasoranti told me I would be President in his lifetime, and God answered his prayer,” he said.

Tinubu added that he had hoped the elder statesman would live to witness his second term and the anticipated benefits of economic growth and prosperity.

However, he said Nigerians should remain grateful for Fasoranti’s long life of service and fulfilment.

“But we must thank God for Pa Fasoranti’s long life of service, grace and fulfilment,” the President said.

He prayed for the peaceful repose of the deceased and asked God to comfort his family and others mourning his passing.

“May his gentle soul rest in perfect peace,” Tinubu added.
