Emerging details have it that Governors Dapo Abiodun (Ogun State), Gboyega Oyetola (Osun State) and Babajide Sanwoolu (Lagos state) provided hints that all was not well with the Western Nigeria Security Network – better known as Amotekun – before what is fast turning out an infamous statement by Attorney- General of the Federation Abubakar Malami was made.

Malami yesterday, January 14, 2020, declared Amotekun an illegal security outfit.

Malami hinged his assertion claim that the provision of security is the exclusive preserve of the federal government.

The Attorney- General’s declaration has, however,  earned him heavy backlash with many pointing out the Hisbah, operating in the north has not been declaimed illegal and Amotekun was set up after widespread consultation including with Inspector General of Police in fashioning out it standard of operations.

Contrary to Malami’s claims, the operation of Amotekun is viewed as a sort of community policing that constitutionally falls under the purview of the state government.

The three governors failed to attend the official launch of Amotekun in Oyo state.

The three absentee governors were discovered to have stayed in their states attending to visitors and events.

‘’They chose to be politically correct. The federal government opposed the launch of Amotekun and wanted to prevent the launch but unlike Rotimi Akeredolu (Ondo state), Kayode Fayemi (Ekiti state) and host Seyi Makinde (Oyo state) who refused to back down on the South-West having a regional security outfit to beef up security, Abiodun, Oyetola and Sanwoolu opted to align with the dictates of the federal government by staying away’’ societynow.ng.

The absence of the three governors served as a strong the bombshell from Malami was coming, a source insisted and added ‘’we just didn’t take note of it’’.

Insiders disclosed that though the governors who have shown the seriousness of purpose with Amotekun have mooted the heading to court to get legal backing for the security outfit, many are a more reconciliatory approach of deliberation and negotiation with the federal government to make Amotekun stay.
