FG Rules Out Electricity Tariff Hike, Says Focus On Metering And Better Service

The Federal Government has ruled out any immediate increase in electricity tariffs, assuring Nigerians that the current administration is prioritising improved power supply, universal metering and consumer protection over higher electricity charges.

Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, said there was no policy by the Federal Government to increase electricity tariffs beyond the current level, stressing that the focus was on delivering better service and ensuring consumers pay only for the electricity they consume.

“There is no policy by this administration to increase electricity tariffs beyond its current level. Our priority is not tariff increase in the immediate term,” the minister said.

According to him, the government’s immediate attention is on improving electricity service delivery, expanding metering nationwide and eliminating estimated billing.

“Our priority is service improvement, universal metering and ensuring Nigerians pay only for the electricity they actually consume,” Tegbe stated.

He added that the Federal Government would continue to explore measures to protect vulnerable electricity consumers while strengthening the financial viability of the power sector.

“Indeed, the Federal Government will continue to examine additional mechanisms for protecting vulnerable consumers whilst simultaneously improving the financial sustainability of the market,” he said.

The minister said the ongoing efforts to reposition the electricity sector would be driven by practical implementation rather than rhetoric, noting that success would be measured by tangible improvements in the lives of Nigerians.

“Resetting the sector is not about buzz words. It is about execution, discipline, coordination and measurable outcomes. We will measure our outcomes by improvements experienced in the daily lives of Nigerians,” he said.

Tegbe reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to building an electricity sector capable of supporting households, businesses and industrial growth.

“Our ambition is clear. Reliable electricity that powers our homes. Competitive electricity that powers our industries. Sustainable electricity that attracts investment. Inclusive electricity that reaches every Nigerian,” he added.
